Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) said the number of foreigners who visited Japan in January 2023 was 1,497,300, an increase of 100,000 from December 2022. Most of the visitors were surveyed in East Asia.

The largest supply markets were Korea (565,200), Taiwan (259,300), Hong Kong (151,000), the United States (88,100), and Thailand (63,400).
Growth appears to have been fueled by increased resumption flights to Japan. The number of Chinese tourists reached 31,200, down 95.9 percent from three years ago.
According to the OAG, the number of international flights arriving at Japan's six major airports (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo) increased 259.4% in 12 months to 11,580 and disabled seats increased 246.9% to 2,759,221.
Along with Okinawa, eight domestic airports have resumed international flights departing from Asia.
